Vajrayogini & Dakini Day

Vajrayogini & Dakini Day

Vajrayogini Self initiation

Vajrayogini (Tibetan: རྡོ་རྗེ་རྣལ་འབྱོར་མ།, Dorje Naljorma) is a fully enlightened female Buddha — the wisdom dakini at the very heart of Highest Yoga Tantra. At Segyu Gaden Phodrang Monastery we honour her especially on Dakini Day, the 25th day of each Tibetan lunar month, when practices connected with the dakinis are most auspicious.

Who Is Vajrayogini?

Vajrayogini embodies the wisdom of all the Buddhas in female form. Radiant red and blissful, she represents the transformation of desire and ordinary appearances into the very path to enlightenment. Her practice is treasured as one of the swiftest and most powerful methods in the Highest Yoga Tantra (Anuttarayoga) for those who have received the proper empowerment from a qualified master. As the wisdom dakini, she embodies the inseparable union of bliss and emptiness.

What Is Dakini Day?

In the Tibetan Buddhist calendar, the 25th day of every lunar month is Dakini Day — a time sacred to the dakinis, the enlightened feminine embodiments of wisdom. On this day practitioners gather to offer tsog (ganachakra, a sacred feast offering), to purify and restore their commitments, and to accumulate merit. Vajrayogini and dakini practices performed on this day are held to be especially blessed.

Vajrayogini Day & Vajrayogini Month

While every 25th day is Dakini Day, the 25th day of the 11th Tibetan lunar month is Vajrayogini’s own special annual day, and the entire 11th month is known as Vajrayogini Month — a period in which all Vajrayogini practices are considered exceptionally beneficial. In the Fire Horse Year (2153), Vajrayogini Month runs from 9 December 2026 to 7 January 2027, and Vajrayogini Day falls on Saturday, 2 January 2027.

Why These Days Are Auspicious

Tsog offerings on Dakini Day purify broken or weakened commitments (samaya), complete the accumulations of merit and wisdom, and create a powerful connection with the swift path of Vajrayogini. For practitioners they are precious opportunities to renew their practice and turn the mind toward liberation; for all who take part through offerings and prayer, they are a source of great blessing.

Take Part — Sponsor the Dakini Day Tsog

On each Dakini Day the monks of Segyu Gaden Phodrang gather to perform the Vajrayogini tsog and prayers. You are warmly invited to take part by requesting prayers or sponsoring the tsog offering. Through your generosity (dana) you sustain the monastery and its tantric lineage, and create meritorious karma in connection with the wisdom dakini — which may be dedicated to your own wishes and the wellbeing of all beings.

We welcome all visitors and guests to come and learn more about this precious gem of a monastery.
