Chötrul Düchen (Tibetan: ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་དུས་ཆེན།) — the "Festival of Miracles" — falls on the 15th day of the first Tibetan lunar month. It commemorates the fifteen days during which the Buddha displayed a series of miracles at Shravasti, subduing six rival teachers and demonstrating the power of his realization.
In the Fire Horse Year (2153) Chötrul Düchen fell on Tuesday, 3 March 2026.
The Great Miracles
According to tradition, six teachers of rival schools challenged the Buddha to a contest of supernatural powers at Shravasti. Over fifteen days the Buddha performed a series of miracles — among them multiplying his own form to fill the sky with countless Buddhas — decisively demonstrating the truth of his teaching and converting many to the Dharma. The fifteenth and final day of this display, the full moon of the first lunar month, is honoured as Chötrul Düchen.
One of the Four Great Holy Days
Chötrul Düchen is one of the four great Düchen of the Tibetan Buddhist calendar — together with Saka Dawa Düchen, Chökhor Düchen, and Lhabab Düchen. On these days the effects of all actions, positive and negative, are said to be multiplied many millions of times, making them especially powerful occasions for prayer, purification, and generosity.
